Applying For HUD Grants

Applying for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grants is an easy and very straightforward process. If you are an individual or family you will apply directly online for HUD grants that are administered by your state. If you are a contractor or business owner, however, you will be required to follow a few extra steps that, if correctly followed, will lead to a successful grant application and an HUD grant award.

Step 1: Request a DUNS number

The Data Universal Numbering System is essential to the HUD grant application process. You can request this number through the HUD website or the Dun & Bradstreet Website who administers this number. The DUNS is a unique 9-digit number that allows the government to identify business entities on a location-specific basis. This number will enable them to see “the business name, physical and mailing addresses, trade styles ("doing business as"), principal names, financial, payment experiences, industry classifications (SICs and NAICS), socio-economic status, government data and more,” as stated on the D&B website. You cannot apply for HUD grant until you have this number.

Step 2: Register for Application Assistance Programs

You could also register with Grants.gov you can then browse all available HUD grants and apply for them right on the grants.gov website. The HUD will have its own separate list of grants available. If you do a grant search by agency and click on the Department of Housing and Urban Development you will see all the HUD grants that are currently available.

Step 3: Choose a Grant

Once you have determined your eligibility for a particular HUD grant, you will want to begin the application process. Each available grant will have a separate grant application package and submission process. Download this unique application and fill it in. Make sure to carefully read through the HUD requirements for the grant application to avoid unnecessary errors and delays. Your application will likely require documentation, such as your organization name or business entity information, including tax identification numbers, addresses and contact persons. Prepare information about the history of your company, including its programs, accomplishments and future goals.

Step 4: Submit Your Online Application

Once you have completed your HUD grant application, make sure that you thoroughly check it over for errors or missed information. Also, because you are submitting the information online, check to make sure that your documents are correctly attached and that the application contains all required components. Afterwards, simply hit submit and print out your email confirmation for your records.
